The Residence exhibits contemporary fine art, old money and critically acclaimed “polysexual - music - art - it - crowd” atmosphere. Originating as an idea for a palatial d.i.y. museum in an abandoned Whitechapel Victorian mental hospital, it officially opened with over 100 exhibitions in a former shop premesis during 2005.
Then came its covert takeover of The Verger’s Cottage (St. Mary of Eton Church), haunted home to gallery director/artist Ingrid Z. The Residence is now establishing itself firmly in the Hackney gentry of Victoria Park Village and has expanded to include private accommodation specially catering to Art Tourists.

The gallery is a live structure to be experienced as a whole scenario or in its individual objects d’art. In addition, the boutique boasts an interesting array of artist multiples, limited edition publications, curiosities and old pennies.

The Visual Art of JOEL GIBB

PV 8 July 2011 7pm-9:30pm

Exhibition continues until 31 July (Wed-Sat 11-6, Sun 12-5)

Berlin-based Canadian artist and singer-songwriter Joel Gibb, who leads the “gay church folk” group The Hidden Cameras is exhibiting solo at The Residence Gallery throughout July.

Marking 10 years since Joel’s first band performance in Residence Director Ingrid Z’s Toronto gallery, Joel presents a survey of his emblematic felt banners reflecting the inherently linked journey through art and music culture since.

“Conflating Pop, Folk, and religious tradition with influences from General Idea to Hugo Ball, Gibb’s cross- disciplinary oeuvre conveys notions about politics, pleasure, mortality, and love.”- “Joel Gibb & G.B. Jones, Rise Up Thou Earth”, ARTCAT.COM

“A coat of arms for the modern artist-singer-songwriter” - Time Out New York

“Something about the piece? Well it is my take on the coat of arms for the Ministry for State Security (The Stasi) of East Germany in the tradition of some of my other pieces like my take on the Canadian Flag. Maybe I should do a union jack this month and make it an ass and dick…hmmmm” – Joel Gibb
